And we are on a roll with the second edition of Why It Works comin’ in hot!
If this is your first time here, welcome—so happy you’ve joined us.
This series is where I break down my outfits (and sometimes readers and clients’) to help you understand the principles of a well put-together outfit.
Together, we’ll explore how to build looks that feel authentic, confident, and aligned with your personality, values, preferences and lifestyle.
This week, I’m sharing three of my own outfits showing you how I maximize my wardrobe and intentionally put each together.
The goal isn’t for you to replicate these looks (though you’re welcome to if you’re inspired!) but to highlight actionable ideas you can apply to your own wardrobe. By the end of this article, you’ll walk away with concepts to create new outfits, wear more of your clothes, and make smarter decisions when adding pieces to your wardrobe.
Try to read this through the lens of
‘What ideas resonate with me?”
“How can I apply this to my own style and in my own wardrobe?”
Let’s do this.
Outfit #1: Coffee Shop Chic
Key Insight: Texture creates subtle visual interest.
Occasion: A casual workday in Bangkok, Thailand.
For this look, I paired a lightweight crochet top with high-waisted floral shorts. Bangkok’s heat calls breathable fabrics garments for hot weather, so I layered the crochet top over a spaghetti-strap crop top giving me enough coverage for a daytime setting while staying comfortable.
Here’s why this outfit works:
Contrast in textures: The crochet’s open weave plays well with the smooth, printed fabric of the shorts. The floral pattern introduces a rhythm by repeating the small crochet patter of the top, creating harmony that is understated so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.
Cohesive accessories: My espadrilles, with their jute soles, tie into the outfit’s texture theme, while their ribbons add a feminine touch that complements my personal style.
Neutral foundation with pops of color: The overall palette is light, soft and neutral, with the red flowers and subtle green and blue pops of colour in the shorts adding a sprinkle of vibrancy.
Takeaway: Pair contrasting textures to create visual interest in your outfits. Whether it’s crochet and canvas or silk and denim, mixing textures adds depth and dimension.
