Why It Works: Bold Colours, Short Shorts & White Ts

Style is my art.

One of the most common struggles I hear from women is: How do I put looks together and know they actually work?

That’s exactly why I created Why It Works—a weekly deep dive into outfit breakdowns that go beyond what meets the eye to focus on why certain combinations are visually appealing, balanced, and effortlessly stylish.

This isn’t about rigid rules or copying my style. It’s about sharpening your eye, understanding the principles behind great outfits, and building the confidence to make intentional style choices—every single day.

This week, I’m analyzing three of my recent outfits to walk you through my thought process—both in putting them together and reflecting on what worked. Whether you're looking to refine your own style, get inspired, or simply geek out over the details that make an outfit shine, you're in the right place.

I encourage you to read this through the lens of:

  1. “What ideas resonate with me?”

  2. “How can I apply this to my own style and in my own wardrobe?”

Boom. Let’s goooo!

Outfit #1: Wearing Colourful Statement Pieces

Outfit #1 Rocking my veery yellow loose-fit linen pants toned down with classic neutral pieces.

Key Insight: Pairing statement pieces with neutrals makes bold colours easier to wear.

Occasion: A casual workday at a coffee shop.

Context:

I love this look because these pants have been a favorite since I bought them last year. I’ve been drawn to yellow, linen, and looser silhouettes, and these pants check all the boxes. They’re comfortable, the fabric is so luxurious and breathable, and the colour makes me feel joyfyul.

Since the pants are such a strong statement, I balanced them with simple, neutral pieces, making the overall look feel effortless rather than overpowering.

Why It Works:

  • Colour Scheme: Neutral with an accent colour (yellow pants + white top). This tones down the statement piece and makes it more wearable.

  • Silhouette: Balanced proportions (loose-fit pants with a fitted top). Keeping one part of the outfit more structured and/or fitted gives me some shape.

  • Accessories: Minimal gold jewelry, featuring sentimental pieces from my grandma, adds a personal touch without competing with the outfit.

  • Shoes & Bag: Neutral espadrilles complement the laid-back feel of the linen pants, and my beige Rebecca Minkoff tote ties the look together.

  • Hair & Grooming: I opted for a semi-curled ponytail to polish the look without overdoing it- it was also practical for day 3 hair.

Takeaway:

If you love statement pieces but find them intimidating, pair them with neutrals. This keeps the focus on your standout item while making the outfit feel harmonious.
