One of the most common struggles I hear from women is: How do I put looks together and know they actually work?
That’s exactly why I created Why It Works—a weekly deep dive into outfit breakdowns that go beyond what meets the eye to focus on why certain combinations are visually appealing, balanced, and effortlessly stylish.
I’m taking you through my thought process for each look and explaining why certain choices worked and where adjustments were needed to demonstrate the thought process behind ‘Why It Works’ to help you learn how to THINK about how you are putting things together.
This isn’t about rigid rules or copying my style. It’s about sharpening your eye, understanding the principles behind great outfits, and building the confidence to make intentional style choices—every single day.
This week, I’ll be analyzing three of my recent outfits: two that I felt really good about and one that, in hindsight, didn’t quite hit the mark.
I encourage you to read this through the lens of:
“What ideas resonate with me?”
“How can I apply this to my own style and in my own wardrobe?”
Now, let’s get into this week’s outfits.
Outfit # 1: Dressing Down Dress Pants

Context:
This look was built around a pair of dress pants from my corporate days that I love and still find ways to wear with my current lifestyle. Living in a city like Bangkok, where the vibe is a mix of formal and relaxed, I can get away with wearing dressier pieces and toning them down to fit a more casual environment.
Why It Works:
Rhythm: The repetition of elements throughout the look creates cohesion. The colour white appears in the top, shoes, and polka dots on the pants, subtly tying everything together. Additionally, there’s a repetition of patterns—ribbing on the top, polka dots on the pants, and the multiple thin straps on the shoes—all contributing to a visually interesting and harmonious ensemble.
Texture: The ribbing on the top, the silky satin fabric of the pants, and the strappy texture of the shoes all add depth to the outfit.
Silhouette & Fit: The slightly flared, cropped pants paired with a fitted top create a flattering shape. The squared neckline complements my defined jawline and clavicle, adding to the overall balance of the look.
Accessories: I kept them understated—a pendant necklace, pearl-accented hoop earrings, and a minimalist Skagen watch—so that the pants could remain the focal point.
Takeaway:
Repetition in colour, pattern, and texture creates cohesion, while thoughtful proportions and subtle accessories ensure balance. Even dressier pieces can feel effortless with the right styling.
